As Seen on TV Cleaning Products

Thank goodness my 6-year-old doesn’t have access to a phone and a credit card. The kid is completely enamored by “As Seen on TV” products.

“Mommy, we can grow upside down tomatoes.”

“Mommy, we can bake brownies that already come cut up.”

“Mommy, you need to get that under the bed shoe house.”

I’m not a huge fan of gimmicky TV products that seem to solve every problem known to man. However, I am not above testing out a few when given the chance.

A while back a guy I used to work with let me borrow his Windshield Wonder. For those of you who haven’t seen the infomercial for this “amazing” product, the Windshield Wonder claims to spare you from contorting your body while cleaning the smudges from your vehicle’s interior windows.

The kit comes with:

A 16-inch handle

2 microfiber bonnets

A 12-inch microfiber towel

A spray bottle

Windshield Wonder storage pouch

All that for about $10 plus $6.99 shipping and handling.

Here’s the thing about the Windshield Wonder, you can also use it to clean windows and mirrors in your home. According to the commercial, the “amazing microfiber bonnets and cloth require only water to get those windows shiny bright.” It’s true. It does remove paw prints and your kid’s greasing fingerprints from windows, but if you use water exclusively, then you are often left with streaks.

Still, this cleaning tool is marketed for its 16-inch handle that easily maneuvers the chamois cloth head into hard to reach interior window angles. So, basically, you are paying nearly $20 for the pleasure of having a nifty handle attached to a microfiber towel.

I’m not knocking the product because it does erase most marks and residue from glass surfaces, but so do paper towels, Windex and some elbow grease.

Of course, if you are like the guy in the commercial and you are sitting at a traffic light and your view of the full moon is hampered by streaks, then having a Windshield Wonder might come in very handy.
