Some women get pregnant so quickly. It seems their babies barely reach 9 months and they are blessed with another pregnancy! I realize not all women appreciate having their pregnancies so close together, but it really is an advantage to be fertile so soon. Some women have to wait much longer before they are able to conceive again. I am afraid I am going to be one of those women. I know there are other women out there who are in the same boat, so I am going to share my (brief) story. You are not alone, ladies!
My son is 17 months old, and for the past four months, we have been hoping to conceive again. I say “hoping” instead of “trying” because it seems futile to say “trying” when you have no signs of returning fertility! I am not-so-patiently waiting for signs that I can get pregnant again, and every month that passes I am amazed that I have not seen my cycle return yet. When I stopped night-nursing, I thought I would begin my cycle any day, since that is very common. As my son slowly dropped nursing sessions, one by one, I thought for sure I would return to “normal” very soon, but it never happened. Even now, with only one morning nursing session left (and the occasional afternoon session when he gets injured or is very tired), I have yet to see any signs of ovulation. All the experts say it is not necessary to completely wean in order to get pregnant again, but apparently that is not the case for me. I know that most people would simply wean their child if it meant getting pregnant again, but I can’t bring myself to cut off that relationship for the chance of possibly getting pregnant again. After all, there are no guarantees when it comes to this sort of thing. With my sons food allergies, those one or two nursing sessions mean a whole lot more than comfort; they are important to his health and diet as well.
As we say in the forums, “send a little baby dust my way.”
