Scrapping Beach Memories

Some of my most beloved scrapbooks are ones that chronicle my daughter’s adventures at the beach. Since we spend a good chunk of time in Hawaii visiting my immediate family each year, I have no shortage of incredible photos of my daughter frolicking in the waves and on the sand. I have also collected a decent amount of memorabilia, from sand dollars to scraps of kite tails.

In regards to embellishments, well, that’s another story. Since I don’t have a lot of money to spend on my scrapbook hobby, I tend to find frugal ways to embellish my layouts. When it comes to beach theme layouts I find that using materials I already have on hand often yield some of the most creative decorations.

For example:

Leftover blue cardstock in various shades can be cut with pinking sheers and placed on a patterned paper background to mimic the ocean.

Use different colored chalk to draw a sunset.

Make a beach ball by punching circles from different patterned paper and using a fine-tipped Sharpie to fill in the details.

Use watercolors to paint crashing waves or a sandy beach background.

Print out clip art of a beach hat, sunglasses, palm trees or a lounge chair and then embellish them with a bit of glitter and sequins.

Rubber stamp images of swimsuits and beach towels, then use flocking powder to add a fuzzy texture to them.

Glue real sand and other treasures, such as flat sand dollars and other small seashells around the entire page to make a beach-y border.

Use the aforementioned method to create frames around the photos you want to highlight or draw the most attention to.

Use your paper folding skills and make origami fish, trees, birds, balls and boats and strategically place them in various spots on your layout.
