Why is it that everyone else’s pregnancy goes by so much faster than your own? I don’t know about you, but my pregnancy seem to last forever. By the time I got the the end, I could hardly remember what it was like to feel normal. On the flip side, when my friend was pregnant, despite the fact that she lived a few houses down and we talked all the time, it seemed like she was pregnant for one month. Once you have your baby, it’s the same scenario. I feel like I have been a mom for years and years, while my friend’s baby seemed to go from newborn to 10 months old overnight. So what does make time drag when it is your own pregnancy?
1. Daily analysis. I think one of the main things that makes a pregnancy seem to last forever is that we are always analyzing everything every single day from the time we find out we are pregnant until the day the baby is born, and it really doesn’t stop there, because then we are analyzing everything the baby does, too. That constant monitoring of progress makes the time between milestones seem like eternity. When you’re only watching the milestones, however, as you would with a friend’s pregnancy, the time seems to fly.
2. Discomfort. I really think pregnancy would seem shorter if it wasn’t so darn uncomfortable or painful sometimes. Just like it is hard to get through a day at work when you have a headache, it’s hard to get through a pregnancy when you have aches and pains all over.
My theory on why subsequent pregnancies go by faster is the the daily analysis is basically eliminated. When you have kids to take care of, you don’t have time to keep such close tabs on your pregnancy. I can’t imagine how quickly a fourth or a fifth pregnancy must seem…
