Christmas in Summer

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve here in Australia. That means the last day for shopping and getting all those last minute food items. Not the ham though, I got that today.

It also means I will be busy cooking pork and chicken and making babaganoush. Given a summer climate we don’t go into for roasts dinners on Christmas Day. Years ago we decided to go for what its better suited to the climate and have cold cooked meats and an array of salads. Tabouli is always one of our family’s favorites. But some of the other salads vary. As well as the traditional coleslaw and tabouli, this year I think I will include the Israeli salad and Mexican salad for a change.

The advantage of a cold meal is that it can all be prepared the day before, so Christmas day is stress free and purely for spending with family.

Recently talking to school children Mick was interested to find out what children liked best about Christmas. Of course there were the usual presents and Santa answers, and then the food, but one that surprised both Mick and I was the bon-bons. We had them one year as they were in a hamper we were given. They are not something we have ever gone in for. After having them the once I thought they were a waste of money. To us the money can be better used on other things rather than bon-bons with a corny joke and a paper hat.

If you are into bon- bons I suggest you keep an eye out after Christmas. I notice from our advertising leaflets many shops have then half price or less after Christmas. So, if bon-bons are your thing why not buy them and put them away for next Christmas. It’s not like there is anything in them that will go off over the year.

One of the other things we enjoy is the summer fruits, peaches, nectarines and cherries. We’ve not long come back from buying peaches and nectarines straight from the orchard. There are some definite advantages to Christmas in summer.
