Carpe diem, the Latin way of saying “seize the day” is a great phrase. On any given day, there is the possibility that one or more opportunities will arise. What you choose to do with these opportunities is up to you. If your day is jam packed with things that you absolutely must get done immediately, you might pass the opportunities up; no matter how great they are because you simply do not have a minute to spare. Alternatively, if your days are scheduled with a little wiggle room, you could act on one or more of these surprise opportunities. To me, this concept is what it means to seize the day.
Those of us that work from home are in a unique position. Many times, we are in charge of setting our work schedule. We can create a work schedule that fits nicely into the big picture of our life as a whole. We are able to create a situation in which it is possible to seize the day. Today, I was able to seize the day by acting upon a few opportunities that came up throughout the day.
Today is a Sunday, the day after New Year’s Day. For me, today was a day that I had no expectation of getting any work done. One of the wonderful things about working from home is that you can do work during times that you would not be at your office if you were working outside of the home. Since I work at home, I was able to go into my home office and get some work done when I realized that I had some time to do so. Also, since I had not scheduled much for myself to do today, I was able to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and go for a long walk with my son. It was the highlight of my day, and I’m pretty sure he enjoyed it too, even though he slept through half of it. I mean, really, how often does the temperature get up over fifty degrees in January in Vermont? I am looking forward to tomorrow, because who knows what wonderful surprises life could have in store for me.
How did you seize today?
