What would you do to be skinny? Well according to a survey done by Fitness magazine, 51% of the 2,400 women asked would give up sex for an entire year in exchange for being skinny.
So is this an indication of a true lack of interest in sex or does it go deeper than that? Could it really be that women value a skinny body so much so that they would give up intimacy with another?
Sadly, many women equate happiness with weight loss. “If only I could lose this extra weight, then I would be happy.” Yet time and time again I have heard women say that even after they lost the weight they still didn’t feel completely satisfied.
So would a woman really feel good about giving up sex for a year in order to have the body they always wanted? If you think about it, this is pretty superficial. Superficial things don’t really have a lasting value.
Now to put a little spin on this topic, I bet there are many women out there who are probably fine about the idea of skipping sex for a year because they may not feel comfortable about themselves as it is. So who wants to get buck naked in front of someone when they hate the way they look?
Why can’t we be satisfied with ourselves? Why can’t we find self-fulfillment in things that really matter? Why can’t our value be in the person we are, rather than how we look on the outside?
Let’s face it…we are almost in competition. We compete with the women who grace the covers of the magazines we are forced to look at in the checkout lines at the grocery store. We compete with the airbrushed models that fill the pages of magazines like “Sports Illustrated.” We compete with the beautiful women of Hollywood who spend their money making sure they look good. It’s hard to compete with all of that.
But is that really where our value should be placed? We are surrounded by billboards and the media that cries out to us, “You should look like this.” If you do, you will get more respect. If you do, you will get a better job. If you do, you will finally meet the right man.
Sadly, the wrong message is traveling down to younger and younger girls. Girls in upper elementary grades talk about “dieting.” We are setting them up for a vicious cycle and the potential danger of eating disorders when we emphasize looks over character.
So let me ask you…what would YOU do to be skinny?
