If your teen is headed off to his first college spring break in sunny Cancun, Daytona Beach or South Padre Island, then you are probably hoping that he has a hands-off vacation. However, if you are spending your kid’s spring recess with him at the following educational vacation destinations, then the look but don’t touch rule doesn’t apply:
Monticello: This Virginia hot spot is a haven for families looking to take an educational vacation. If you visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate be sure to give yourself extra time at the Griffin Discovery Room where nothing is off-limits. Kids can touch replicas of the third president’s possessions, from his bed to his polygraph machine. Children are even invited to try on outfits modeled after the president’s own 18th-century wardrobe.
Redwood National Park: Experience big fun during your spring break trip to California. Really big fun. Kids visiting Redwood National Park can get up close and personal with sky-high sequoias and other massive natural wonders. In addition, the park allows for additional hands-on leaning experienced with its popular guided tide pool tours. Your budding biologist can hunt for underwater creatures, including colorful sea stars and sprawling sea anemones.
The Freedom Trail: A trip to Massachusetts is not complete without seeing history come alive at the world-famous Freedom Trail. Kids can learn about Colonial history from an 18th-century ship captain during the 90-minute Pirates and Patriots tour. Actors, dressed in 1770s naval garb, lead the tour which brings to life events that most kids only read about in books. Highlights of The Freedom Trail’s Pirates & Patriots Tour include skits that have characters raiding ships in the city’s North End. You’ll also get to see re-enactments of other noteworthy events that took place along Long Wharf, which used to be the epicenter of Boston’s colonial shipping industry, and visit the site of the 1773 Boston Tea Party.
