Okay, this is embarrassing, but my underwear was in a sad state of affairs. A mixture of sexy little things from my pre-baby days to nursing bras (my youngest is now four-and-a-half, and no I am not nursing him) to what-was-I thinking boy cut panties, I had a lot of stuff but not too much that I really loved.
The underwear was all stuffed in drawers and unorganized, so the first thing I did was to start getting it in shape, so to speak. This helped me identify those pieces that I really used and wanted to keep. Everything is rotated now. This means that if there is something that never gets worn, it is quickly identified and discarded. My drawers are neat and clean, no longer overstuffed, and everything is available and at hand.
If you would like to stage your own underwear makeover plan, you can follow these steps.
Take Stock
Pull everything out of the drawers and examine what you have. You may have to dump it all and start over. Remember that most bras lose their support and stretch after six months! Get rid of the undies that you don’t love, the bras that sag, the wires that poke you, the items with rips or stains and anything that is uncomfortable. If you wouldn’t wear it immediately and it isn’t a speciality item (such as a strapless bra), toss it. Leave at least one set so you can wear something to the store when you are ready to restock.
Make a List and Fill it
Now that you can see what you are left with, make a list of how many pieces you need. This will vary according to what clothes you wear on a day to day basis and how often you do laundry. Be realistic. Then head to the store.
Get a professional bra fitting. This is available at most speciality lingerie stores and department stores. Wear a bra that is not padded for the fitting. when you try on bras in the store, bring a favorite shirt or dress and put it on over the bra, so you can see how the bra affects your shape with real clothes on.
Take Proper Care
Finally, when you have all of your new stuff and your favorites, make sure to take proper care of it so it doesn’t stretch out or get dingy. Either hand wash or put delicates in a mesh bag and wash in the machine on gentle and with gentle detergent. Use the cold water setting and never put the items in the dryer unless the care label says it is okay.
