Rewards are very motivating. When I used to work as a preschool teacher, I found it to be a great way to gain cooperation. I have used it as a mother and in a variety of other settings.
Children aren’t the only ones however, who enjoy rewards. Adults love to be rewarded for hard work as well. A raise, an extra day off or a promotion are great ways of being rewarded in our careers. At home we might find a reward being the one who gets to pick the family movie. There are all different ways that rewards can be done.
Since fitness really is work and for some, it can be difficult to stay motivated, I think rewards could also be used here.
For some, the idea of a reward is being able to eat their favorite bowl of ice cream or taking one day of the week to enjoy something that is not healthy. While there is nothing really wrong with these rewards, there are other ways we can pat ourselves on the back for a job well done.
One reward might be a new outfit once you hit a certain goal. Another reward might be a trip to the nail salon or splurging on a day at the spa.
What about a reward of an extra hour of sleep? A day where you stay in bed watching old movies? You could even reward yourself with a shopping trip at the mall or to some local antique shops. Buy a new CD, a DVD or a good book. There are so many ways that we can reward ourselves that doesn’t destroy what we have worked so hard for.
Write a list of 10 things you would enjoy buying or doing. Then set some fitness goals and make sure you reward yourself with one of those 10 items. Then set more goals and go down the list until you have been rewarded for all 10 things. Go ahead, you deserve it!
