Picture Frames

Everybody loves pictures of kids or artwork made for them by children. These cute picture frames will help you display favorite snapshots, portraits, or artwork, and they make nice gifts for grandparents and far away family friends.

Use the lid from a shoebox or other heavy cardboard box to make cool picture frames. Cut center from the lid, leaving one or two inches around the edges. Cover the “frame” with fabric or ribbon, or paint it. Stamp it, stencil it, or add stickers. If using fabric, glue on some batting first, for a more substantial “upholstered” feel. Glue on beads, trim, or any other embellishment.

Cut a piece of Styrofoam to fit inside the lid. Glue attractive paper or fabric over the foam. When dry, add your favorite photo or child’s artwork to the center. Staple or glue in place, and attach the frame to the foam backing with glue or staples. Add a saw-tooth picture hanger or a cardboard easel to the back.

An empty CD case can also be made into a fun picture frame. Older kids will like this project too. They can add a magnet to the back and use it to frame a favorite picture in their lockers at school. They can also add a cardboard easel and use the frame on a nightstand or dresser, or add a hanger to the back and hang pictures on the walls in their rooms. They may want to make an entire collection. If so, you can purchase empty CD cases reasonably. Simply attach fabric to the inside of the CD case, mount the picture, and add any trim that you like.

Little kids will enjoy making these frames for loved ones. All they have to do is glue a magnet onto the back to make a one of a kind fridge magnet for Grandma, Grandpa, or even a schoolmate.
