Remember those silly Goofy shorts? At first glance that sentence seems redundant, but anyone reading a Disney blog knows exactly what I’m talking about. I’ve spoken of them before; even though I’m a handful of generations out from the 1940s and 50s, the years of greatest Goofy short prevalence, even I encountered one or two in my life, and not just for fun.
The last Goofy short I remember from growing up was in my high school Driver’s Education class. We watched a grainy film, clearly made decades before, of Goofy learning how to drive and causing several accidents along the way. Recently Goofy shorts were resurrected in support of the Disney Cruise Line.
Now Disneyland is joining the fun, but in a much bigger way. At least to my knowledge, the original theme park isn’t posting any new Goofy shorts on their website. No, in the tradition of its founder Walt Disney, Disneyland is going much bigger: a new Goofy attraction, based on his famous shorts, is coming to the park.
Stitch Kingdom has the details on the new ride, entitled “Goofy’s Sky School.” Of course it’s a roller coaster; any Goofy-led expedition is sure to involve many twists, turns, ups, and downs before finally reaching its destination.
“Goofy Sky School” draws its inspiration not just from the aforementioned Goofy “how to” shorts, but also from the non-education cartoon “Goofy’s Glider.” From that comes the aviation theme.
Adventurers on the ride will strap in their seats at a flying academy to take their instructions from everyone’s favorite wacky cartoon dog. You’re all beginners with Goofy at the helm, so the trip is sure to be one wild ride.
This new coaster debuts on June 3, which means it must already be in construction in Disneyland. It will come to the California Adventure Park, debuting with the new “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue” and “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.” Both of these recently underwent re-workings and will also open on June 3.
I know I seemed scornful last time of Goofy “How To” shorts. I didn’t mean that; I just thought the amount of fuss given to a quick and kind of cheesy blurb on the Disney Cruise Line website was a bit much. I do think, however, that this coaster will be really neat.
Goofy “How To” shorts are Disney classics, and while sometimes they didn’t seem appropriate (watching Goofy get into a series of wacky accidents in my driver’s ed class, while at the same time viewing footage of horrible real-life car wrecks was just dissonant and felt inappropriate), they’re a cute part of Disney history. They’re the perfect inspiration for a fun new Disney ride.
