My CSA Haul and What I’m Cooking

We got another great batch of produce from Farmer Joe (yes that is his name) and his family in our share this week. We have a half share, meaning that we pick up our fresh organic produce every other week.
Each pick up can last us up to two weeks, although it usually takes us about 8 or 9 days to get through everything because of all of the greens that we are getting right now.

Here is what we got:

  1. A quart of strawberries, plus a second quart I purchased at the farm. My four-year-old adamantly told me several times that we couldn’t forget the strawberries.
  2. Asparagus
  3. Head Lettuce
  4. Spring Onions
  5. Mixed Herbs including some wonderfully fragrant rosemary that is making my kitchen smell really nice.
  6. Rhubarb
  7. Salad Greens
  8. Spinach
  9. English/Hull Peas
  10. Sugar Snap Peas

Because I am a simple cook, here is what I plan on doing with it all:

  • A strawberry rhubarb pie. Two weeks ago I had to make one with frozen strawberries. This week i’ll use fresh and account for the extra moisture by altering by thickener. You can see my original recipe here.
  • Strawberries and whipped cream as a desert or a no bake strawberry pie (provided of course that I can keep my four-year-old from devouring every strawberry in the house before dinner).
  • Wilted spinach with olive oil
  • Grilled asparagus with sesame oil
  • Numerous green salads
  • Steamed sugar snap peas
  • And for the English peas, I may put them with ham or dress them cold for a salad.
  • The onions and rosemary will go in some sort of roast chicken dish, and I’ll probably dry the remaining herbs for later use.

What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions for this wonderfully fresh and healthy food? What would you have done with it?
