The Big Pack

So it was finally time to get to packing. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you’ll know that my wife and I moved 1000 miles south to enter a graduate program shortly after getting married. Five years later, with one graduate degree already earned and another just one dissertation away from completion, we’re heading back up north for a thousand mile journey with a beautiful son we picked up along the way. Things are, indeed, good.

What is not good is moving. It’s not something I was prepared for or happy to do. While the destination of our journey would most certainly be a welcome change from the five years we’d spent away from family, the arduous process of packing up a truck with all of our belongings was not something I looked forward to. Duty called, however, and it had to be done.

We were fortunate enough to have an aunt come down to help us pack everything up. Not only was she able to help us pack and clean, but she also very much assisted with our son. While my wife and I had our brains neck deep in boxes, tape, and other ephemera, our son’s wonderful aunt could see everything clearly. While we were packing I really felt bad for the little man. Moves seem to be sort of hard on the little kids. It’s confusing. Luckily, we had a wonderful helper there with us.

Amazing as it sounds, while I often felt like a bad parent for “ignoring” our son for more important matters (like lifting heavy things into a truck), he really didn’t have any problems whatsoever. During our time of packing our son was running through the house (often happily) as there was now an amazing amount of unused floor space to play on. Somehow, kids end up making the best of everything. Thanks for having fun, son, and helping your Dad not feel like he’s “ignoring” you.
