Foster Care Problems

There is a sad reality in America when it comes to how children are treated rather mistreated in the foster care system. Children that are placed in foster care already have strikes against them. The children have either been physically, mentally or sexually abused, they have lost their biological family and been placed with strangers. Shouldn’t the foster homes that they are placed in be the absolute best that it can be? Should the children in foster care have to be mistreated by a person who just wants the checks?

The horror stories that you hear about foster children being abused, malnourished and not properly cared for are too frequent. You would think that children in foster care would be kept clean, healthy, have clothes that fit and that the foster parents they are with will treat them with love and compassion that every child deserves.

When my son was two he was placed in foster care because his biological mother had abandoned his one month year old brother. The foster family had a son that was his age and they were the only two children in the home. My son was with them for a little over a year and during the time he was with them he did not get dental care, when he came home with us he had to get 7 of those silver caps put on his teeth because of the severe decay he had. He had such a severe case of lice that we did 4 treatments on him and they were still not gone and we had to cut his hair almost to a military cut to get rid of them. He was not potty trained and his foster mother told us not to bother because he was not smart enough to be potty trained at the age of three. Within 1 week of being in our home he was not even in pull-ups anymore. He had severe diaper rash and needed medication to clear it up. His foster parents packed him up with a trash bag of clothes that were for a baby not for a 3 year old. There were no clothes over size 2T and he was in 3T & 4T’s, he had no toys to take with him.

If CPS came into my home today and saw my children in that condition he was in when he was in foster care they would remove all my children from my care. Yet the state is paying these foster parents to care for the most precious children, where is the logic in that?

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
