Something Is Better Than Nothing

We sometimes receive conflicting information when it comes to exercise and physical activity. We are told that a little bit is better than nothing. But then we are also told that if you aren’t engaging in a certain amount of exercise or physical activity every week, there is no benefit to your body.

So which is it? If I don’t spend 5 to 6 days a week, 30 minutes a day in some form of exercise, is it pointless to do anything?

According to new guidelines issued by the “American College of Sports Medicine,” although they recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense exercise every week, even less than that is helpful.

They have put out a new book called the “Complete Guide to Fitness & Health,” which is written for those who have never implemented an exercise regimen in their life, to those who exercise on a regular basis.

With 60% of adults in the U.S. not regularly engaged in some type of physical activity, they say that just 60 minutes a week of exercise does provide some health benefits. In other words, yes, something is better than nothing.

However at the same time they do wants adults to understand that getting in at least 150 minutes of exercise can significantly reduce the chance of the number 1 killer, heart disease.

Their focus is less on how much a person exercises and is more on how much time people spend in sedentary activities such as using the computer or watching television. Sitting for extended periods of time is more harmful than anything else. Research shows that it increases the chance of other health problems as well, like cancer and diabetes.

They encourage people to still do the things they enjoy, like watching television, but to find something active that can be done at the same time. Walking on a treadmill or lifting weights is one example. If you enjoy reading, do it while you are riding a stationary bike. Find creative ways to bring activity into those things you enjoy doing that usually require sitting.

Remember, something is better than nothing.
