Make Your Own Loom

Do you have an aspiring seamstress on your hands? What about a little one with busy hands? I found a wonderful way to keep my smaller children busy. I love crafts that a child can create and keep busy all on her own. If a child is busy that means her mind is engaged in an activity, that is if it is not sitting in front of the TV. I prefer active play over sitting in front of a screen any day. In all honesty, I think children prefer that also but when active play is not provided they go to a source which does provide it. So be that source for your child and watch her bloom. One craft and activity that keeps little hands and minds at work is creating your own loom. The idea is simple and putting it together is just as simple.

What you need:

Yarn: You will want to get a bunch of yarn. The quality is not important so purchase the least expensive but make sure to provide fun colors. I love the year that has strands of silver but that can be costly. If you already sew or knit you may have several kinds at your reach.

Cardboard: Simple cardboard will provide the backing for this project. Cut it into a square. The size depends on your child. It is best to keep it small enough to easily hold and manipulate to encourage a longer play time.

Tape: Tape is the magic behind the cardboard. So far, if you do not knit or craft, you most likely have three or two out of three of the supplies already!

What you do:

Wrap yarn around the cardboard and tape both end pieces to the back. The yarn on the front side should look like several rows or a small loom. Now cut several strands of yarn in many different colors long enough for your child to thread up and over until she reaches the end. That’s it. You are done and your child will be engaged for quite some time.
