Entertaining Teens During the Summer

Which is harder, planning a party for a temperamental teen or a picky preschooler?

I’ve had experience party planning for the latter and it was no picnic, but witnessing what my friend is having to go through putting together a summer shindig for her 15-year-old daughter, I realize now that organizing my preschooler’s bash was a piece of cake.

My friend has gone to great lengths to make this party one to remember for her one and only daughter. However, it has been rough from the get-go. Mother and daughter couldn’t come to terms on a theme, menu or decorations.

But, enough with their drama; I thought it might be helpful to share some of the party ideas that didn’t make the cut in their home. In my opinion, the suggestions are too good to toss and may help someone looking for ways to keep teens entertained this summer:

Skate Night: Looking for a unique way to cool off on a hot summer’s night? Host a teen fling at the local ice arena. Most rinks have party rooms that are included in the reservation. All you have to do is bring some food, beverages and decorations to make the night a success.

Backyard Nightclub: Set up a large tent or canopy in the backyard, then pump up the music under a string of Christmas lights. Serve teen-friendly finger foods, such as hot wings, pizza, sandwiches, nachos and trays of cut vegetables. For dessert, create a build-your-own-sundae bar or rent a cotton candy machine.

Beach Bonfire: If you don’t have a fire pit in your backyard, then have your teen’s friends meet up at the beach. Once you are there create a bonfire that’s big enough to roast hot dogs and marshmallows for smores. Have your teen guests bring along their musical instruments. Those who are not musically inclined can dance or sing the night away. Just be sure to check on laws that may require a permit to create a bonfire on the beach before sending out the invitations.
