Organizing Your Closet

hangers

I am always trying to find ways to make more space in my bedroom closet. It used to be a cluttered mess of clothes, shoes, and sometimes random odds and ends that I threw in there. The past year or so I have come up with a few solutions that have helped keep my closet more organized and less cluttered.

Donating

One idea is to donate your clothes, shoes, and accessories. Donating is good for you and for someone else! There are plenty of charities such as Goodwill, Red Cross, and other organizations that will either pick-up items from your house or have a drop-off location. Down the street from my house there is even a drop-off container for the Salvation Army, making it convenient to donate. One tip that works for me is that for every one item purchased, I donate at least two old items.

Organization

To keep my shoes from becoming a messy pile, I have a two shelf shoe holder on my closet floor that provides three layers. I can place shoes I use often on the top shelf, less commonly used shoes in the middle, and shoes I don’t wear often on the bottom. If a shoe organizer that is hung on the back of your door or in your closet is your thing, try looking at discount home and clothing stores (like Ross, Home Goods, etc). I once found a sturdy one for ten dollars at Ross.

Finding a place for seasonal clothes is another way to help keep your closet organized. I live in California where my seasons kind of mesh together. However I do have some seasonal clothes such as my summer shorts, swimwear, bulky winter sweaters, etc. One thing that has worked for me is to put seasonal clothes such as my shorts and swimwear in a container at the top of my closet. This way when I do need them I can put them in a more accessible location in my closet or make room in my dresser. Another favorite place to store clothes that I don’t wear often is in under the bed containers. These are nifty, flat containers, found inexpensive at places like Target that make stashing clothes away a cinch. They fit under most beds and you just slide them out when you want a particular item.

Hanger Trick

Another idea to be more organized and know which items to donate is the hanger trick. I learned the hanger trick from a friend who is a queen of organization. Have your hangers all facing the same way such as have the hook point out of the closest towards the bedroom. When you wear a top and put it back, turn the hanger the other way (pointing to the closet wall). After six months you can see which clothes are on hangers with the hook going towards the room and which ones are not. This helps you to identify which items you haven’t worn in over 6 months, helping you to see what clothes might be good candidates for donating.

Give these ideas a try and share what works for you!
