Gray is the new blue; skorts rule; and accessories are the new underwear–a definite must-have.
This according to the back-to-school fashion police.
Thank goodness my kid wears uniforms to school.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you probably know that millions of students from coast-to-coast are getting ready to head back to class. In fact, in many states the kiddos are already hitting the books.
Still, if you are an avid or even occasional TV viewer then you might think that school has nothing to do with books and oh, I don’t know, learning tangible skills, and is more, nay, all about… the outfits.
I’ve lost count of how many different commercials I’ve seen, which feature HUGE sales on back-to-school clothes. Interestingly, none of the garments I’ve seen modeled in the TV ads are ones I would dare allow my child to wear in public, let alone to an institution committed to educating future generations.
But that’s just my humble, conservative opinion.
If you want the real dirt on what youngsters should be sporting in order to look cool as they head back-to-school, then you might consider the following notable fashion trends:
Comfort is king: Apparently, students these days should not be ashamed to dress comfortably for class. Fashion experts claim that jeans and a hip graphic t-shirt are hot, hot, hot. Of course, if your school’s dress code prohibits you from making personal statements via your shirt, it’s best to stick with a fitted tee in bold, solid colors or you’ll really end up in hot water.
Accessories are your friends: And we’re not talking about Smartphones. Leave the electronic accessories at home or in your locker and concentrate on spicing up your outfit with items such as thick belts, leather ankle booties or bags featuring leopard and other animal prints. After all, jungle is the new wild.
What’s old is new again: According to fashion gurus, clothing trends from the 1980s are making a comeback. Yes, as frightening as that may be for parents my age, many of the styles from the “Like a Virgin” decade are back in full force. Think sweaters tied around the shoulders, bright neon colors, ballet flats, skinny jeans and leggings.
