This past Sunday was my turn to do sharing time. It had been 2 weeks since I had been to church, and I was looking forward to it. I had a cool game planned, and knew the kids would have so much fun. However, the subject was the word of wisdom, and I felt strongly that they needed to hear the doctrine of the word of wisdom before playing the game so that they understood. We had older kids pair up with younger ones and did the simplest lesson. We pulled out our scriptures and read and talked together from D&C 89. It took the whole time, and I didn’t have time for my human tic-tac-toe game.
But, something I learned was that the kids needed this simple lesson. They were attentive, and read from the scriptures with me. After all, our theme for this year is, I know the Scriptures are True. And, I felt good knowing that we actually used them.
There are a lot of great resources on the internet for lessons. You can definitely fluff it up as much as you want. But, I wonder with primary if all that fluff is necessary? Sure, they love to play a game (which we are going to try and do next week), but I think they love learning just as much. That’s the beauty of children.
We simply talked about the things in the word of wisdom that are actual rules, and then the things that are personal choices. This was a distinction that needed to be made in our ward based on past things that were taught when I wasn’t there. So, the air was cleared. We then turned to talking about the blessings we can receive from following the word of wisdom. We dissected some of the big words, and that was it. The time was up.
I love teaching children in Primary. I love the simplicity of what they need to learn, and the honest sincere faith. I love their trust and seeing their smiling faces each week. I’m definitely meant to be in Primary.
