Today I noticed that one of my fellow bloggers, Richele McFarlin, wrote about the topic of Labor Day. I’ll be working a little bit this Labor Day just like Richelle, and I am sure that we won’t be the only home-based professionals spending at least some of the day working. I really do not mind working on Labor Day because there are no family barbecues, parties, or other events beckoning to me to come away from my desk. If there were, it might be a little harder to stay on task.
The main reason that I will be working on Labor Day this year is that for my family, it is just another day as far as our schedules are concerned. My husband works the same days of the week every week, and Monday is one of them. He works in a restaurant, so his workplace is open on Labor Day. Since as I mentioned before there are no parties or other events that we wish to attend that day, he did not request the day off either. Our son is not school age, so he will be at home with me like he is every day. I will therefore be doing my typical Monday things, which include working during naptime and after he goes to bed in the evening.
Another reason that I will be working on Monday is that I have two projects due that day. I am so happy to have work to do, and I will be doing a bit of reflection on Labor Day about how fortunate I am to have created my own businesses and how lucky I am to be able to work at home. While I will be giving thanks for my employment situation I will be sending positive thoughts to all of those people in Vermont, New Hampshire, and elsewhere whose jobs were washed away by Hurricane Irene.
In the area of New Hampshire where my husband works, the river flooded like it had not flooded in over a hundred years. Last Sunday, the water began to rise and flooded the plazas and shops by the river. It even went up into the street and began coming into the parking lot of the restaurant where he works. They closed up shop at the usual time and were able to get out of there just before there was too much water on the road. The water stopped just short of going into the restaurant, but many other businesses in the area were not so lucky. There are stores that will be unable to reopen for a while, and others that sustained structural damage and will have to be torn down. The people that worked in those stores are now without jobs, and it is my hope that they will find employment soon either at a new location or by turning to home-based work. My thoughts will be with them on Labor Day.
