As I mentioned yesterday, I’m going a little wild on the craft ideas for my daughter’s Sparks group this year, and I wanted to share some of these ideas with you. Since Halloween is coming up and the girls have an outdoor badge to complete, I started to think about bat studies. We’ll do a night walk and hopefully we’ll see some bats: there are many of them that love to eat mosquitoes right behind the school where the children meet. To complement the walk and discussion about bats, here are a few batty crafts.
The Bat Pumpkin
Combine pumpkin studies with bat studies. While you’re carving and decorating your big pumpkins this Halloween, get a few of the tiny decorative pumpkins as well. Paint them black. Add glitter if desired – and glitter is almost always desired, isn’t it? Glue two big eyes to the front of the pumpkin and glue two wings to the back. You have a bat pumpkin: not overly aerodynamic, but definitely a cute Halloween decoration.
Hanging Bat
Usually I find toilet paper tube crafts rather boring, but this one is awfully cute. Again, get your black paint. Paint a toilet paper tube black. Cut bat wings to fit the tube, and cut two triangles of black for ears. Get googly eyes that fit onto the tube. Cut two long black pipecleaners for legs. Glue the ears and eyes onto the top of the tube. Glue the wings onto the back of the tube. Punch two holes on the bottom of the tube and place the pipecleaners through the holes. Once the bat dries, hang it upside down by the pipecleaners!
Bat Lacing Shape
Need more fine motor practice after yesterday’s lacing crafts? Why not try a simple bat laicing shape. Cut out bat wings from black card and punch holes around the bat at least ½ an inch in from the edge of the shape. Use orange and yellow yarn to lace around the edges of the bat.
