A Guide to Fall Mums

Mums are in bloom and will soon be available in many forms. They make great decorations for the fall. Mums are flexible in style and will loo just as good in an elegant vase and they will in a rustic bucket (although I tend to favor the later for the fall season).

Shop around when looking for mums. You may find some unusual shapes or color combinations. New varieties are popping up each season, so it pays to visit a few different garden centers in your area. You may just be rewarded with a new type of mum that no one in your neighborhood has seen before.

The four most common types of mums include: Button Mums, Decorative Mums, Single Mums and Spider Mums. Each of these varieties of mums has its own unique look. Which is your favorite?

Button Mums

Button Mums are smaller mums that have a nice petite and compact dome shape. The tightly packed petals are perfect when they are interspersed with larger looser blooms, because they can add both contrast and texture to your bouquet.

Decorative Mums

Decorative mums are the classic mums that we tend to think about when we think about mums. They are big, showy and dramatic, with pretty petals. Did you know that decorative mums are also called football mums? This is because this type of mum is the traditional flower used in the corsages that are traditionally seen at football games in the fall.

Single Mums

Single Mums look much like daisies. The have a row of petals around a central disc. Single mums work really well incorporated into wreaths or as filler flowers for large flower bouquets. They come in some very interesting colors, such as a rust red-orange and are perfect for fall decorating.

Spider Mums

Spider mums can give you a little touch of the exotic. The petals are long and tubular, and many varieties have petals that also curve or hook on the end. Spider mums are beautiful all by themselves or mixed into a bouquet.
