Building a Home-Based Business from the Ground Up – Part 1

When it comes to starting a home-based business, most people can’t just decide one day that they are going to quit their day jobs and do something else for a living. That is probably one of the biggest mistakes that can be made.

To be successful in any type of home business, you will need to build it from the ground up. But you will need to build it on a timetable that is workable and realistic. So you start with laying the foundation.

I equate the foundation of a home business to be your business plan. What is your goal? What type of business do you plan on running? What do you hope to gain from it? Is this something you would like to do for the rest of your life? Do you hope to make it your full-time job eventually?

You really need to have some sort of plan in place. Just as you wouldn’t (or at least you shouldn’t) enter a marriage without discussing the future (such as children, where you will live, etc.), the same is true for a home business.

Going into a business blindly is a sure way to destroy it. So be smart and spend time jotting down all of your goals and thoughts about what you hope to accomplish. You may even need to write down a list of pros and cons to the business you are thinking of building.

When I decided to try and make writing a career, I was working as a preschool teacher at the time. I couldn’t just quit my job and assume that it would all work out. I had to begin to look into the various types of job opportunities available for writers and seek out which ones I might be a good fit for.

I had to learn the field before I jumped into it. While I knew writing was something I wanted to do, I didn’t realize all the different areas of writing there are (resumes, technical, copywriting, ghost writing, and the list goes on). The same is true for virtually any other type of business. You need to understand the field before you just jump into it.

In my next blog we will continue exploring how you can build your home-based business from the ground up.
