Quality Time with Your Spouse

A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about the importance of getting away with your spouse. We were about to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and despite original plans to take this romantic vacation to Maine, it had all blown up because of finances. But in the end I was grateful since it was during the time of the hurricane that we would have been there.

The day before our 20th wedding anniversary we went back and forth with ideas on what we could do. We wanted to get away for the entire day but not spend a lot of money. We finally decided on a little town about two hours from our home, Lake Geneva.

Well that day turned out to be one of the most enjoyable days I have experienced in a long time. In fact, at the end of it both my husband and I agreed that we needed to do this more often.

Sure, now that we have teens we can easily jump into our car and go out to dinner on our own. We can run errands or take a walk. But it has been a very long time since we actually spent an entire day together, from morning until late at night.

The day was great. We started off by having lunch in a small sub shop, then took a walk down to the lake and enjoyed an ice cream cone for dessert. The heart of the town has a few blocks of stores, so we did some shopping.

Probably the best part of the day, though, was the hour and a half boat ride we took. It felt so great to be out on the open water and got a very interesting guided tour of the million dollar homes and mansions that line the lake.

Through this tour we found out that we can actually walk on a public path that takes you around the homes, so after the boat ride we spent a good hour or so walking and admiring the homes.

It started to get dark and we were hungry for dinner, so we drove two hours back to our favorite restaurant, “Red Lobster,” ending our day there.

I hadn’t realized how much I missed spending that quality time with my husband. We have decided to make this a monthly thing. So now we are looking forward to returning to Lake Geneva next month when the leaves change color.

What about you? Do you and your spouse take that time to get away with one another? Try scheduling it in. Determine to set aside one night a week where you get uninterrupted quality time together. Set aside one day each month that you spend the entire day together. Then set aside one weekend each year where you get away together.

How do you plan quality time with your spouse?
