For those of you that are new to my blog I am an Elementary Education major at UVU. Last week one of my professors assigned a huge project. She asked us to write and illustrate an entire children’s book. While it is a fun idea, the task seemed more than a little daunting to me. When we are finished with the project the books will be sent off to a company in Kansas that will bind them into hardback books for us to keep in our homes. I was excited about it, but being the extreme perfectionist that I am I knew the project was going to take me many hours to complete. Now, I’m a single mom and believe it or not this isn’t my only class, so even finding the time to shower can be a challenge some days, let alone write an entire children’s book.
I thought and thought and thought. What in the world was I going to write about? I write for adults, not children! Then it came to me. This was going to be Logan’s story. Logan has always loved reading stories together, so instead of reading we were going to write one together! We sat down at the table just the two of us and off we went. It didn’t take long before our little story was done. Then we both colored pages. He told me what he thought I should draw and what colors to use. He loved watching our story unfold on the pages. As soon as one page was done we’d have to hold it up next to the others so he could see it!
Now every night before bed he asks me to tell him “our story” again. It is something that we will cherish forever and all because of a school project that I had spent the week dreading.
