In recent years my husband and I have not really done anything to celebrate Halloween. We made efforts last year to dress up with our son and went to a costume party of sorts at the private school were I used to work. This year things are different: our son is two, quite verbal, and very perceptive, and I am pregnant (what do pregnant women dress up as for Halloween). I am not the type of person to invest a lot of money in costumes but we wanted to do something special for our son.
We decided to invite our son’s only male cousin over for a little Halloween celebration (they are ten months apart). Both of us moms are not big on the candy scene of trick or treating but we did not want to deprive the boys of a Halloween treat. I made homemade caramel apples for our families to enjoy in lieu of the traditional Halloween candy. We also had a small pumpkin for the boys to decorate with paint, and of course the boys would dress up in the costumes. My husband also wanted us to dress up too for the kids sake he felt that they would really like seeing the parents dressed up too. That of course brought up the difficult question of what can a pregnant women dress up as for Halloween. I wanted something simple and not gaudy (I was not going to be a pumpkin). With a little research, I decided that I would dress up as a Greek goddess. All I would need is a white sheet and some gold cord. Easy. Simple. Done. My husband and son’s costume was a bit more complicated but still simple. Lately our son has been completely fascinated with scarecrows. My husband brilliantly came up with the idea and went to work to fabricate scarecrow costumes for both himself and our son.
Our little Halloween party began at seven in the evening. Pictures were taken of the boys in costume and the parents in costumes too. The paternal grandparents and godfather come over too. Everyone enjoyed caramel apples!
