One of the main ways that we can be prepared is to stockpile a good food supply for ourselves and our families. Having enough food, should an unexpected crisis occur, is very important. Food is one of the necessities, and being well nourished can make the difference between staying healthy and succumbing to illness or disease.
Stockpiling food can be helpful not only in a natural crisis or a man-made one but also in times of a financial crisis, either personal or global. If the cost of food goes up to high for most people to afford, or if it becomes scarce, having a stockpile of food for your household that you can use to get you through takes on added importance in your life.
There are several different ways that you can stockpile food.
Coupons/Sales
Shop the sales and use your coupons such as with Extreme Couponing, but with the goal of stockpiling real, valuable food. Forget the 40 jars of mustard or the 400 rolls of toilet paper. Instead, concentrate on food with a long shelf life, such as canned and jarred goods, along with some items that can freeze well.
Peanut butter is one example of a food that stores well, is a good source of protein and good fat (which young children especially need), and can often be gotten cheaply with sales and coupons.
Bulk Warehouse Stores
Head down to your local Costco, BJs or Sam’s Club and stroll through the aisles. You can find many items in bulk available right on the shelves. Many times the prices for these items in bulk is pretty good. You’ll also find some luxury items that you might want to stockpile to make your food supply more interesting and comforting. For example, you can buy packages of gourmet hot chocolate in bulk, to which you can just add hot water. Little things like that can raise the spirits, if you find yourself having to rely on your bulk food supply.

There are a few online stores that will put a food supply together for you. I’ve written about these pre-packaged preparedness kits, and you read all about them here:
