Mommy, It’s Cold Outside!

It’s that time of year again, if it hasn’t started snowing, it will soon. Regardless, at least here in Utah it is bitter cold outside, causing our little ones to bring playtime back inside. It’s time to remind them that there is more to do indoors than to just plop in front of the TV all day. Sit down with your kids and get the creative juices flowing. If you’re having trouble, here are some fun indoor activities to keep your kids occupied while they are cooped up inside this winter.

Bowling Night! Empty water bottles make great bowling pins. If they are falling over a little too easily, fill them with just a little bit of water to hold them down. Grab one of your child’s small balls and bowl away!

Have a picnic in the family room. Grab a picnic basket and fill it with all the picnic essentials (i.e. juice boxes, paper plates, napkins, etc.). Throw down a blanket in the middle of the floor and have a fun little lunch with the kids! Sure beats eating at the kitchen table!

Kids love pretending to be pirates searching for buried treasure. Hide a bunch of pennies around the house for the kids to find. If pennies are too hard to find, wrap some blocks in aluminum foil and give your kids a bag to collect their treasure in.

Enlighten their senses with a sensory table. Blindfold your kids and set different textures out on the table. Cold cooked spaghetti noodles, peeled grapes, and cornstarch are some fun ones. If you need some more ideas do a google search. There are all kinds of sites with ideas that you could use. Your child will love guessing what they’re feeling and it is good practice for them to learn some good descriptive words.

So turn off the TV and have some fun!
