Have you ever found yourself at the last minute trying to find a tie or a belt or a clean dress shirt for someone? Between holiday parties and various holiday events, such as Christmas choir, I am afraid that I have found myself in that situation. I remember last year, having to run out the night before a concert to get dress pants, shirt and tie for my oldest son, who grew out of his dressy clothes. The run to the store was not fun, and I probably paid more than I should have paid, because I was in an emergency situation.
This year, I’ve vowed to be more prepared with my family’s wardrobe, whether it is those dressy clothes for events and parties or warm layered clothes and boots for caroling, ice skating, snowman making and other winter fun.
This way when someone comes to me and says, “Mom, I need….” the next response will be “Thanks, Mom.” Of course, I won’t forget a wardrobe check for myself and my husband as well.
I’m starting with the kids, first, and I start with the oldest child, because I might be able to find items to pass down to one of the younger ones. I make a list of what is needed, including a white dress shirt, black pants, a belt, dress shoes, snow boots, gloves, etc. Then I go through the closet and drawers, plus the attic to “shop.” It is not enough to note that the items are there, but they must also be clean, pressed and in excellent repair. Anything wanting goes on a list, along with the store where they can be purchased. I organize my list by store, this way I can knock out a bunch of items in one shot.
Anything that needs to go to the dry cleaner gets put in the car, so it can be dropped off on my next set of errands.
