Have you ever stopped to think about your funeral? Most people don’t unless we’re at a service for someone else, and then we might comment to our spouse, “Don’t bury me in a coffin like that.” Then we just go on our way without saying much more. But you can save not only hassle, but money, if you take the time to think about it now.
My dad passed away eighteen months ago. He and his wife had purchased a package from the local mortuary that included their viewing, caskets, funeral programs, embalming, flowers … the only thing it didn’t include was the placement of the headstone. When it was time to make the funeral plans, all we had to do was pull out the folder given to us by the mortuary and make a few final decisions—most had already been determined by my dad. This made everything so much easier on us—we were so saddened by his death, and I think that trying to make those decisions in the middle of our grief would have been too difficult.
But in addition to taking that emotional strain off us, it took some financial strain off, as well. My dad and his wife had been making payments on this funeral plan for some time, so it was nearly paid in full. Not only that, but by buying it in advance, they were able to lock in some of the rates. As inflation drove the prices higher, they still received the lower rate. I’d never thought about saving money on a funeral before, but this was such an amazing idea—almost like an insurance policy against high funeral prices.
I don’t know how many funeral homes offer plans like this, but if you can find a good home in your area that does, I’d recommend you look into it. It saves money, it saves time, you ensure that the funeral is done your way, and when the time comes for you to pass, it takes an emotional and financial burden off your loved ones so they can focus on remembering you and your amazing life, instead of trying to figure out what casket you wanted and how they are going to pay for it.
