TLC’s new holiday program is trying to convince me that I should drop $25,000 on a Christmas tree made from deer antlers.
No offense to the Kentucky cowboy who hand crafts these extreme trees, but even if I had 25 grand, I still wouldn’t fork it over for a pointy structure made from 100 dropped deer antlers and a bunch of PVC pipes.
Heck, I’m not even spending 25 bucks on my seasonal decor. Rather, I’ve found ways to make my home look festive for the holidays without draining my wallet. With a little time and even less crafting skills, you too can deck your halls with the following inexpensive Christmas crafts:
Styrofoam Snowman: Purchase three foam balls: one large, one medium and one small. Cut off a small piece from the top and bottom of the base and middle balls, and the bottom of the ball that will be the snowman’s head. This will provide a flat surface for balls to sit on one another. Stack the balls to form the snowman and use glue to keep them in place. Another option is to connect the balls with toothpicks or small wooden dowels. Finally, decorate your snowman with paint, markers, glitter glue, sequins, fabric or other embellishments, such as cloves for buttons, small twigs for arms and a carrot sliver for a nose.
Gifts Galore: Create a large display (or several smaller ones) by wrapping old boxes with festive paper. Dig through your basement or garage and gather a variety of different size boxes, then cover them with festive wrapping paper and place them in the corner of a room or outdoors on a covered porch or patio for a delightfully affordable dose of holiday cheer.
Sweet Holiday Scenes: Buy some Pixy Stix in holiday colors, including red, green, white, blue and yellow. Next, pour the powdery candy into tall glass candle holders or a large round bowl. Then, place festive-looking foil-wrapped chocolate candies in the shape of Santa, snowmen or reindeer in the colored “snow” to create a seasonal scene that looks good enough to eat. You can also embellish the scene with gumdrops, lollipops and Christmas tree-shaped Peeps.
