Ways to Spend Less in the New Year

If your New Year’s resolution is to cut back on spending, then now is the time to gather tips on how to look for the best deals. After all, spending less doesn’t mean avoiding stores all together. Rather, the goal is to get what you need for the least amount of money.

So, how can you accomplish this?

Here are some money-saving tips:

1. Look for items in the clearance section. However, don’t buy something just because its price is radically reduced. If you don’t need the item, it’s not a bargain. Instead, you are simply filling your home with unnecessary clutter.

2. Comparison shop. You should only step foot into a store if you absolutely need an item. For example, if you are in desperate need of a new throw rug because your dog turned your other one into a chew toy, then go in, but don’t buy the first one you see. Rather, visit several different stores to compare prices and styles. Often, you can do this online, so you don’t have to waste money on gas driving from store to store.

3. Save your receipts. Most major retailers will offer you a price adjustment if you buy an item that is later placed on sale.

4. Buy items sold in bulk and split the cost with a family member or friend. Not only will you score a sensational deal rather than buying individual packages of the same product, but you can also increase your savings by using a coupon for the bulk items.

5. Keep an eye out for garage sales or frequent consignment stores for deals on children’s clothes and shoes. Take a break from shopping at fancy department stores, and visit local thrift shops that carry name brand merchandise. The cost of buying designer duds there will be significantly lower than what you’d pay at a traditional department store.
