I have been blessed with great friends throughout my life. When they first learned of my divorce they flocked around me to support me and get me through that difficult time in our lives. They called, sent Facebook messages, and many text messages just to check in on me and make sure I knew that they were always there if I needed anything. I was grateful to have them at a time when I felt like I had nothing else.
As time went on we all got busier and busier with our lives. We all have families of their own and many of us are working and going to school on top of that. Our time is extremely limited, but we still think of each other often. We may not check in as often as we used to, but we all know that if any of us were in need the others would drop everything to come to the rescue. That’s just how friendships work.
Over the holidays I got the opportunity to catch up with my dear old friends. We met back in first grade and still all these years later are the very best of friends. The three of us used to be inseparable (they are twins). From the time we were little we stood by each other and supported one another through some difficult things. We both came from single parent families and knew the struggles that came with that. We always had a deep understanding of each other because of the similar things we had been through. We even tried to get their dad to marry my mom. Yes, as six year olds we thought our plan was foolproof! It didn’t work out, but they are still good friends, and we all laugh about it to this day.
As we’ve all gotten older we don’t get to see each other much anymore. Every few months we make sure to check in with the others and usually spend hours catching up instead. Fortunately, no matter what the circumstances we all know that even though we are all busy with life, we will always be there for each other. These meaningful friendships are the ones that will last a lifetime. It’s nice to know that they are always there, because everyone needs a little rescuing sometimes.
