My daughter is getting ready to move. We all know how much fun that can be. This is her first move alone, she will be getting her own apartment for the first time.
I’m a super organized freak, especially when it comes to moving, my daughter, well she is pretty much allergic to organizing. Every time we moved in the past she did not feel compelled to part with any of the things she has collected, she just threw them in a box and that was that. My daughter saves everything, she has all of her notebooks from school, going back to elementary school. She also has every note she was passed during school, as I looked at the sheer volume of those notes I’m surprised she learned anything!
I tried today to pass some of my organizing wisdom down to the next generation, I think maybe it’s sticking. I told her first to go through her closet and dressers, yes, I said dressers, she throws nothing away! I had her set up a box to donate and a box for things that needed to be thrown away. She was amazed at how quickly the donate box filled up. I, however, was not at all surprised that the band t-shirts from seventh grade didn’t make the cut.
The box to donate filled up pretty fast, finally she had everything in one dresser and the closet was organized. Next she moved on to her books and videos. I told her to keep the same system, keep, donate, or trash. I think its working. I have several boxes of things to deliver to the local thrift store and my daughter has rediscovered things she forgot she even had.
I also tried to get her to organize her packing. I’m so crazy about moving, I label each box with a room name and a number, then I put the number on a list with the contents of that box next to it. I always know where everything is. I tried to explain this to Hailey but she just told me to lay off the coffee for a while and maybe try and find a life. Ungrateful kid.
