Milk prices have certainly been going through the roof lately, haven’t they? I should know because I have three growing kids that need their milk and one aging mom (me) who wants to have healthy bones in her old age. I also use milk a lot in baking.
Lately it seems as though we are going through quite a lot of milk, so I am stepping up my money saving strategies, so I can save money on milk and get milk for the lowest prices. Here are the ideas that I use.
Dry Milk
I know that no one really likes the taste of dry milk, but guess what? You can still use it to reduce your milk cost. Dry milk is a great bargain. you can replace some of your regular milk with reconstitutes dry milk without anyone noticing (up to about 25 percent, I’ve found. You can also use that reconstituted dry milk in your recipes. I mix up a pitcher of it and have it on hand for all of my baking. I haven’t found a difference in consistency or taste. Note that dry milk is fat free milk.
Gas Rewards
Many gas stations with stores issue rewards for using their gas. You can redeem the rewards for anything in the store (but not more gas). Save those rewards to get free milk. It is a much better use of the “free money” than the other convenience items you might buy.
Coupons and Sales
Around my way, coupons for milk are rare, but I do take advantage of them when I can. A better bet I have found is to grab discounted milk that is almost at it’s end date and then freeze it. Just use a little bit of the milk before you freeze and shake it a bit when you allow it to thaw on your counter.
