Nature Study for Preschoolers

Exploring nature is a joy in life. It is especially one for the preschooler. Preschoolers are fascinated with exploring the outdoors. How many times does your child beg to go outside? No matter the weather there is always something to explore if only for fifteen minutes. Night or day it is a great time to go for a walk and see the world all around you.

Nature Study Activities:

Bird Watching: Even if you do not know every bird in your yard you can enjoy watching them with your children. It is fun to see the wonder in a child’s eyes as she sees a bird fly through the air or build a nest.

Make a Bird Feeder

Materials:

Cardboard toilet paper roll
wax paper or newspaper (about 8 inches by 8 inches at least)
peanut butter
plastic or regular knife
2 foot piece of yarn
paper plate
bird seed (small seeds work best, sunflower seeds fall off)

Directions:

1. Put the yarn through the hole in the toilet paper roll and lay out on a piece of wax paper or newspaper.

2. spread the peanut butter all around the outside of the roll.

3. Put bird seed on a paper plate.

4. Roll toilet paper roll in bird seed

5. Tie knot in the yarn, and hang on a tree.

(The activity submitted to me by a friend who teaches preschool.)

Make a Nature Journal: Simple get a composition book and colored pencils. Have your child draw a scene from nature every time you go on a walk or decide to study something outside. Include tree rubbings and add in leaves, grass and other fun things you find. If you child wants to collect rocks and pinecones then provide a small basket or box in addition to the journal.
