How Safe Are Our Babies?

Another recall on a popular baby product happened last week. Did you hear about it? Johnson and Johnson recalled Aveeno baby lotions. You can find the source for my information here. In reading this article, I was shocked to hear that they had 12 different products recalled in the last year and a half. Isn’t that a little much for a name brand we trust so much?

I can’t help but wonder, are our babies safe?

The truth is, they probably are. However, we can’t help but be scared. We are, after all mamas who love our children. I was grateful to be a breastfeeding mama when I heard about the recent baby formula recall at the end of last year. And, I truly felt for all the Moms out there that had to be worried about doing something as simple as feeding their children.

It seems that sometimes these companies issue these recalls as a precaution, but unfortunately sometimes these recalls come as a result of an infant death. And, more often than not, a death that could have been prevented.

So what can we do to protect ourselves?

First, we need to be aware. Find a resource for news like this that works for you. If you run across this kind of information, share it. Another Mom will thank you. You can visit websites like the Consumer Product Safety Commission to find recent recalls on products. When you see the list of recall information, at first it might be alarming. But, my view is that it is better to be informed than not.

Second, do your homework. When you are about to buy a new product, or baby gear, do the research. If buying something second hand (as we all do) make sure to ask for the manual so that you can use it properly. If they don’t have it, look it up online. Make sure that you are not buying products like car seats from a garage sale, or a place that cannot guarantee when the item was purchased.

Last, trust your gut. If your Mama instinct is telling you that something isn’t quite right, then look into it. Don’t always assume that if it’s a product with a widely recognized brand name that it is automatically safe. We hope it is, but if you suspect a problem, don’t hesitate to follow your motherly intuition.

Unfortunately, we live in a world today where there are a lot of things that can harm our babies, however the fortunate part is that we have way more safety nets available to us to protect our babies too. We have more information, better laws, and car seats!! At least we are no longer bouncing around in the back of the car not strapped in like when I was a kid. The bottom line is that knowledge is power, and as a Mom, that’s the best defense you can have to protect your baby.
