Canned Air Is Not Always Your Friend

Sometimes I think I must be so very innocent, either that or I’m just not very imaginative when it comes to using household items as drugs.

I was recently smacked in the face with the fact that people use those cans of duster that we clean our electronics with, to get high. I really had no idea. I was telling my sister that I read in the news about someone dying from that and she told me that one of her friends had to stop buying it because her teenage daughter was using it as an inhalant.

I don’t know how it works or what it does, nor do I want to. It’s just one more reminder of things in our home that seem perfectly harmless but can be used as a drug by a curious teenager or someone struggling with drug addiction.

I thought I would do a post on how to protect our children from accidentally ingesting harmful substances. Let me just say the Google search was an eye opener. Not only can you find a list of ways to get high with things around the house but there are actually forums dedicated to it. Very scary.

Some of the things that I found that can be abused and are very common are:

*Nutmeg
*whipped cream
*cough syrup
*spray paints
*glue
*markers

These are just the beginning, some of the things I read were really frightening because in the hands of a curious child the consequences could be horrific.

Keep things out of reach of the little kids and talk to the big kids. Education is the best defense but it doesn’t hurt to keep an eye on things like nutmeg and canned air, just to be on the safe side.

Just one more reason to rid your home of as many chemicals as possible, you never know when someone will willingly or accidentally ingest them.
