Many times, when someone commits adultery, they will remove their wedding ring. It just simply gets taken off their finger without a second thought to the meaning behind the ring.
When a spouse finds out that infidelity has been committed and the ring they vowed on was just easily taken off to break the vow, the wedding ring may never mean the same again. What the wedding ring signified is no longer in effect. The wedding vow has been broken and so has the significance of the wedding ring, right?
Not So Fast – What If It Means Something Else
Whether or not to wear your wedding ring after your spouse commits infidelity is a personal decision. It’s a very emotional decision as well.
Many people take their wedding ring off in retaliation. For example, “You took yours off to sleep with someone else, and now I am going to take mine off to show you that I am no longer tied to you.”
Some people take their wedding ring off because they don’t feel that it’s right to wear a piece of jewelry that was given to them with a promise attached to it. That promise has been broken and so the meaning behind the ring is gone.
For people who decide to keep their ring on do so because they feel the marriage isn’t over until it’s over. They still leave their ring in tact because the vows they made are still intact. It was their spouse who went against their vows, they didn’t. They keep their ring on to remind themselves that they are still pure and committed to the marriage.
Understanding Why You Leave or Take Off Your Wedding Ring
For whatever reason you decide to keep your wedding ring on or off, take a few moments to understand the meaning behind your reasoning. It can help you come to terms with what happened and how you want to view the future of your marriage.
You may be starting all over or you may be willing to move on with the same marriage you had but with many changes. Either way is a healthy way to heal from infidelity, knowing which one you are choosing is what is most important.
