Nothing says spring cleaning like cleaning windows. It’s a big job and that’s why we only do it once a year but it does benefit you and your home. Clean windows make the whole house appear cleaner, they let in more sunlight and are a joy to look through. Also if you leave that grime on your windows they can become permanently etched and hazy.
The ideal day to clean your windows is warm but a little overcast, if it’s too sunny your windows will dry to quickly and this can lead to streaking. Make sure you have everything you need on hand and get ready for sparkling windows.
Everyone has their own favorite solution for window cleaning. I generally prefer lots of warm water and a little dish washing soap. Vinegar is usually my go to glass cleaner but outside where I will be slapping on lots of water I don’t want the vinegar to interfere with the seals or caulking on the window.
I also use lots of old clothes, a scrubber sponge and a squeegee. If you need a ladder, make sure it is in good shape before you climb on it.
First thing to do is remove the screen. After the screens are off I soak the window with lots of soapy water. After wetting the window I wait a minute or so and then scrub with a wet scrubber sponge. This will get all the bird mess and any other crusties off. Once the scrubbing is done wipe down with lots of clean water. I keep the garden hose handy for this part. Then squeegee.
When doing the inside of the window I use vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Make sure you clean the window tracks as well.
Now stand back and admire your sunny house, if you see a streak, buff it with a tiny bit of vinegar on a cloth until its gone. That wasn’t so bad now was it?
