Getting Ready For A Yard Sale

Have you been spring cleaning? Are you finding a houseful of things that you no longer need? Now is the perfect time to start planning that spring yard sale.

Every year my subdivision has a community yard sale, it’s a great time to get rid of things I don’t need and make a little extra money. A little preparation now will make sure you are ready when the time comes for the big sale.

As you are cleaning closets and dresser drawers, take out anything that is too small, out of style, or you just don’t like anymore. This goes for shoes, purses and coats too.

By thoroughly going through each room you will be surprised at the things you’ve stored away because you might need them one day. Don’t forget the garage and any outdoor storage as well.

Be brutally honest with yourself. If you haven’t used it in over a year, chances are you are never going to use it again. Some things are not yard sale material, but you can help make them yard sale material. If you have clothing from the kids that is stained or has holes, remove the buttons and zippers and put those in a paper bag and sell them as craft notions. As someone who does crafts I’m always looking for buttons, snaps, zippers, single earrings, beads from broken necklaces. Gather all those things up, someone will be happy to have them.

Be realistic about pricing. Up until now this item has been taking up valuable real estate in your house and you have had to clean it, or clean around it, price it to sell. Does it really matter if you mark all the jeans $1 but some of them have designer labels? If you are not going to wear them again, $1 is great. The other option is to load them all in the car and donate them to charity for free. I’ll take $1 a pair if I don’t have to haul them anywhere.

The cleaner your house becomes the larger your yard sale pile will be. If you don’t have enough for your own sale, get a group of friends together and throw a big sale on someone’s lawn. Just remember, buying everyone else’s things is defeating the purpose!
