The Laundry Monster

At my house, laundry is a never ending job. Just as soon as I get the laundry room floor cleared, the piles start again. Sometimes it feels like before I’m even finished folding something it’s back in the hamper.

Laundry is not difficult but it is time consuming and really, nothing shortens the cycle of the washer or dryer so you have to find other ways to make the job a little easier.

I tried using homemade laundry detergent but just wasn’t happy with the results, I am going to try some other recipes but in the meantime I want to make sure I’m not throwing any more money away than I have have to.

It’s important to use the correct amount of laundry detergents, with all the different concentrates available, unless you read the label you may be using too much detergent. Using too much detergent not only wastes the detergent but also time and electricity. Once when Hailey had thrown a load of clothes in the washer for me she used way too much detergent. When I went to put them in the dryer they were actually sticky. Of course they had to be washed again, this time without detergent. I looked at the bottle and because I had bought a different type with a different concentration Hailey used too much.

Then there is the cost of the detergent. I have my favorite brand, I think everyone does. Consumer Reports studied 50 brands and while Tide came out on top there are some less priced detergents that tested almost as well.

Don’t forget pre treating. If your clothes are stained pre treating may be your best defense against having to throw out a shirt you love, or your child’s favorite sweater. Try to pre treat as soon as the stain happens and then on laundry day you don’t have to search for stains before tossing everything in the washer.

Although it takes a little more effort, line dry some of your clothes on a nice sunny day. Nothing beats the smell of line dried sheets when you climb into bed at night.
