Egg-strodinary Easter Fun

Unless an egg has money in it, my daughter is not interested.

She’s seven.

Still, I’m not giving up on getting her to appreciate the incredible, edible egg. By Good Friday, she better learn to love them a bit more because we are in charge of decorating three-dozen hard-boiled eggs to take to a friend’s Easter party.

Thirty-six eggs; that’s a lot of dye and a lot of patience waiting for each egg to finish taking a bath in colored vinegar water. What’s more, I want to make our eggs stand out, so I can’t just hand them over to my kid and have her color them with crayons.

Actually, that probably would help them stand-out, but I’m thinking we might explore other decorating options, such as:

Paper and Rubber Bands: My mom suggested dying the eggs, but before they dry we should roll balls of crumpled paper over them to create a unique pattern. She also recommended wrapping them in rubber bands before placing them in the dye to create another nifty design. When the eggs are dry, remove the rubber bands to reveal the one-of-kind pattern.

Styrofoam Eggs: If you don’t want to mess with dyes, then consider decorating Styrofoam eggs. This is an especially good option for kids with egg allergies or for very young children. My daughter and I decorated a dozen Styrofoam eggs last year and I was quite pleased with the results. For starters, they last a lot longer than traditional eggs, plus you don’t have to worry about keeping them refrigerated after they are decorated. We used a plethora of embellishments on the eggs, including glitter, sequins, lace, ribbon, buttons and colored glue dots. If you don’t have the patience to adhere tiny decorations on each egg, simply have your child use some paint or markers to cover the entire surface. The goal is to not have any of the white Styrofoam showing by the time you are done decorating.
