A Green Prom Dress

We have quite a prom dress controversy brewing here in Tennessee. A student, Texanna Edwards, thought it would be a good idea to wear a dress that resembled a Confederate flag to her high school prom in Gibson County. When she mentioned it to a teacher, the teacher warned Edwards that the dress might not be acceptable. Sure enough, school officials deemed it “offensive and inappropriate” and Edwards wasn’t allowed inside the prom, despite the fact that the dress contained the school colors.

In Memphis, prom is a huge deal and several companies are offering dresses for rent. This is much greener than going out and paying for a new dress. USA Today estimated that the average price spent on a prom dress is $231 – yikes!

But, it looks like a girl in a neighboring state had one of the best ideas of all for a prom dress. Maura Pozek of Reeds Spring, Missouri not only decided to make her own prom dress, but she decided to be green about it as well.

Pozek, a senior, used “lots of hot glue” to make her prom dress of cardboard and paper. She had wanted to use all cardboard, but that wasn’t working out, so at the last minute, she decided to make her skirt of paper bags.

What are the advantages of having a dress of cardboard and paper? Well, when her left sleeve curled up, she just tore it off and went on. However, she did admit the skirt was “crumpled” from sitting in the limo.

This is not Pozek’s first venture into a green prom dress. Last year, she constructed a prom dress made up of 4,000 pop tops. The year before that, her prom dress was made of Dorito bags. She had a backup plan in case the cardboard/paper dress didn’t work out – duct tape!
