Paper Projects

If your search for cheap scrapbook paper leads you to Wal-Mart, you may want to put on the brakes before heading to the check-out line.

Whereas I purchase many quality goods at the discount retailer, last week, I learned that scrapbook paper is not one of the store’s best buys. The low price may be incentive for you to toss it into your cart, but once you get home, you’ll quickly realize that you get what you pay for.

Be that as it may, there are ways you can add to your paper stash without going bankrupt. For example, the Internet is a valuable resource for inexpensive scrapbook paper. Die Cuts with a View offers an exceptional brand of affordable paper, including colored cardstock and stacks of patterned paper. The company also sells a variety of mat stacks that are pre-cut to fit 4×6 and 5×7 photos.

One thing to keep in mind if you are planning to save on paper by purchasing in bulk is that you will often be left with extra sheets if you tend to design single page layouts. Fortunately, there is a litany of ways you can use leftover scrapbook paper, including, my daughter’s favorite, crafting paper dolls. A chain of paper dolls makes for an eye-catching embellishment, especially for a princess-themed layout. In addition to making the dolls with extra paper, you can use patterned scraps to design outfits for them. For fancier paper dolls, add some buttons, gem stones, sequins, buttons, eyelets, ribbon or brads to their ensembles.

Another simple way to use extra scrapbook paper is to make 3D butterflies or flowers. Just punch three shapes from coordinating patterned paper, connect the shapes and secure with a staple. You could also use a square punch to create a grid from leftover patterned paper. To keep the grid in place, wrap small pieces of ribbon around the squares before adhering them to your layout.
