Fellow blogger Carol Paxman recently wrote about the refrigerator oftentimes being “Command Central.” This is the spot in the house where pictures and other information is oftentimes collected.
I believe that everyone should have what I call a command center in their home. This is the main spot to go to if you need to know something. It is the central location for vital family information.
Years ago the refrigerator used to be my main command center. It was filled with papers held in place by homemade and store-bought magnets. At times it was difficult to tell that there was a refrigerator underneath it.
Now I have a new command center. Well, let me first say that I do still use the refrigerator for some papers but most of our important information can now be found on our dry erase board.
This is also found in our kitchen…which seems to be the hotspot for most families who have a command center. Guessing it has something to do with the fact that we like to congregate in this room to eat.
But going back to what I was saying, this dry erase board has been a lifesaver for our family. Once my family learned how to use it, it became a very useful resource.
What I like about my dry erase board is that it contains a calendar and a blank section for writing notes. The information that fills up our calendar is color-coded.
If it is an event that pertains to the whole family, it is written with a black dry erase marker. If it is particular to one family member (such as an appointment), the color depends on who it is. We all have our own “color”—pink for me, dark blue for my husband, orange for my oldest son, purple for my daughter and light blue for my youngest son.
This helps us know what is going on, who it affects and when it’s happening. I love it.
The blank section of the dry erase board is used for writing in grocery items that we need. No longer do I have to listen to my children say, “You never get such and such…” They now know if they want something in particular from the store, they have to write it on the list.
But we also write other types of notes, such as when to pull the meat out of the freezer or the phone number of someone to call. It is a place we all know to go to for that important information.
Do you have a command center? Or is your family information scattered all over? Perhaps its time you establish one, since it can definitely make your life a whole lot easier.
