Questionable Prom Favor

left

If you consider not becoming a grandparent while your kid is still in high school a “favor,” then you may not be opposed to the parting gift being handed out to some Brooklyn teens attending prom.

According to reports, students at Bedford-Stuyvesant Preparatory High School in Brooklyn, New York, will be offered a unique party favor upon leaving prom next month – a free condom.

The school’s principal, Darryl Rascoe, told the New York Daily News that hundreds of condoms will be made available to students on the night of the big dance.

“This is necessary,” Rascoe told the newspaper. “It’s practical and it’s the right thing to do.”

Despite the fact that condoms have been proven to combat exposure to sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, and reduce the risk of pregnancy, many parents are livid that the school would consider passing out condoms at prom.

The majority of the moms and dads speaking out against the prophylactic prom favor are proponents of abstinence and don’t think teens should be having sex on prom night or any other night prior to their wedding night.

Unfortunately, as the school’s principal pointed out to the Daily News, a high percentage of teens are not waiting until they get hitched to procreate.

“There are several kids in our school who already have children,” said Rascoe. “We’re fooling ourselves if we think we can leave this up to teens to be proactive.”

Rascoe also noted that condoms have been available at Bedford-Stuyvesant Preparatory High School for three years, as part of a city-wide health program, though this is the first time they will be distributed at the prom.

Next week, the school plans to host a safe-sex assembly with students, teachers and health officials to discuss the condom prom favors and how their dispersal is not a green light to get busy between the sheets following the dance.

How would you feel if your teen received a condom as a prom favor?
