I work at a health science center and a few weeks, they had a nurse conducting a seminar on menopause. I am not in full blown menopause, but experiencing the “joys” of perimenopause. But, I figured I would go to check out the seminar anyhow.
What I did was pretty much waste my lunch hour. It might have helped some people there, but nurse mainly talked about hormone replacement therapy. Oh no wait, it’s called hormone therapy now. The study that was done years ago that showed that HRT could cause problems has been revisited by many and there were some problems with the study.
I did learn that with menopause, Caucasian women are more likely to experience problems with insomnia (I can testify to that!) and African American women are more likely to experience problems with hot flashes.
One lady did ask about homeopathic remedies for menopause symptoms and she promised to talk about it, but I stayed 50 minutes of the hour long seminar and she didn’t say anything about it.
So I had to search online for some homeopathic ideas. I know some people are more likely to trust traditional medicine and that’s fine. I would just prefer to try the homeopathic route first, although I realize you need to use care when doing that.
What can you take for hot flashes? You can try dong quai (a root that may also help relieve stress), black cohosh (a perennial plant that I actually tried and found some success with), licorice root (may also help with insomnia), and motherwort (an herbaceous perennial plant that may also help with stress, insomnia, and anxiety).
One way to combat night sweats is bamboo sheets. Yes, you will still sweat, but from what I’ve read, the sweat is absorbed, which might keep you from waking up drenched. I may have to look into purchasing some of those!
